iPhone Rear Housing Replacement

Accidents happen. If your iPhone Back Glass is broken or the Rear Housing is severely damaged, we can help.

Apple reintroduced glass on metal frames starting from iPhone 8 and later models. These design changes were implemented to support wireless charging and gain several advantages that come with it, along with MagSafe charging from iPhone 12 and above models. However, apart from the elegant looks, the back glass is prone to crack after falling on a hard surface.

You may choose this repair if: your back glass/frame is cracked or broken or you need to go for a new color.

About iPhone Back Glass & Rear Housing:

The back of your iPhone, often called the back glass, rear housing, back case, or back glass assembly, consists of a precision-cut, hardened glass panel designed to blend seamlessly with the phone’s sleek metal frame. This glass is further reinforced internally by a laser-welded steel and copper structure, providing durability and improved structural integrity. The glass itself is fused securely to the metal chassis through microscopic seals, enhancing the device’s resistance to dust and water ingress.

Starting with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, Apple introduced removable back glass, simplifying replacement procedures. This design was further adopted in the iPhone 15 series and newer, making repairs easier and more cost-effective. However, earlier models, including the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, as well as preceding generations, feature non-removable back glass. In these unsupported models, damage to the back glass typically necessitates replacing the entire rear housing assembly.

Important Considerations for Back Glass Replacement:

When the back glass alone is replaced in unsupported models, the repair process involves manually removing shattered glass fragments, applying adhesive, and fitting a new glass panel to the existing metal frame. However, this manual process is significantly less precise compared to Apple’s original factory installation, which involves specialized machinery and exact alignment.

Due to this manual method:

  • Water and dust resistance may be compromised, leaving your iPhone more vulnerable to liquid and particle damage.
  • Structural integrity is often weakened, reducing the overall durability and longevity of the device.
  • Aesthetic imperfections can occur, as manual fitting doesn’t guarantee a seamless finish.

To maintain optimal performance, water resistance, and appearance, we strongly recommend replacing the complete rear housing assembly if the back glass on your unsupported iPhone model becomes damaged.

FAQ's

Here are some of the most common questions customers ask about iPhone back glass.

Can broken glass on the iPhone be fixed?

Yes. While it might be tempting to go for a cheap fix by just replacing the glass, iPhone users are unaware that an inexpensive repair is not always reliable. Hence, at CelMetro, we replace the complete rear housing assembly, which comes with the back glass and the metal frame.

Does it matter is the back glass of my iPhone is cracked?

Your iPhone will lose its water resistance if the back glass is cracked. Water and electronics don’t do well together. iPhones have a built-in battery, and water gets through the cracks and into the phone; the electric current can be sent to places that it shouldn’t go, and that causes damage. Additionally, wireless charging may no longer work as expected. Cracked glass may even cut your hand if it’s protruding from the corner of the case. Do remember these details if you decide to postpone servicing your device.

Why does the iPhone have back glass?

Apple introduced back glass to support wireless charging starting with iPhone 8, the first iPhone model to have wireless charging. Wireless charging transfers energy from the charger to the iPhone through electromagnetic induction to the coil located inside the back of the iPhone. The reason it needs a back glass is that there isn’t a piece of metal affecting the electricity going through and charging the phone.

How strong is the back glass on the iPhone?

Apple introduced a new protective glass coating called Ceramic Shield, starting from iPhone 12. Ceramic shield promises up to 4x better drop resistance than previous iPhones, general scratch resistance, and clear optical performance for your iPhone rear cameras. The key technology in the protective glass is ceramic crystals. These small ceramic nanocrystals are embedded in the glass matrix using a high-temperature crystallization manufacturing process. The interlocking structure of crystals helps to deflect cracks and chips.

Does broken back glass affect iPhone performance?

If your iPhone’s back glass is moderately cracked, it will not have any performance impact. However, a tiny crack or chip can quickly expand and cause additional damage to your iPhone. Broken glass can cut your hands and fingers and make it harder to use your iPhone. Additionally, your iPhone loses its water resistance, and if water gets through the cracks and into the phone, the electric current can be sent to places it shouldn’t go, and that causes damage.
